What Qualifies as a Water Damage Emergency

Active water damage is always an emergency. Water damage that is not addressed within the first hour causes significantly more structural damage than water addressed immediately. The IICRC — the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification — defines the professional standards for emergency water response. Any active water intrusion is an emergency. If water is still moving through your property — still flowing from a broken pipe, still entering from a storm breach, still rising from a flooded drain — every minute it continues is additional damage. The damage curve in a water loss is not linear. The first hour and the eighth hour of exposure do not create the same amount of damage. Materials that are extractable and salvageable at hour one may be fully compromised by hour eight.

What to Do While Waiting for Our Crew

If it is safe to do so:

• Turn off the water source if you can reach the shutoff valve safely
• Turn off electricity to the affected area at the breaker — do not enter standing water with electricity active
• Move valuables, documents, and irreplaceable items to a dry area
• Take photos and video of all affected areas before anything is moved
• Do not use fans or household dehumidifiers — they can spread contamination if the water source is category two or three

Do not attempt to extract standing water with shop vacs if you suspect sewage backup or category three contamination. Do not walk through standing water if electricity has not been shut off. When in doubt, wait for us.

Why Fast Response Changes the Outcome

Mold can begin developing within 24 to 72 hours of water exposure under Oklahoma’s climate conditions. Drywall that has been wet for four hours is still salvageable in many cases. Drywall that has been wet for 48 hours is almost certainly not. Hardwood flooring that is extracted and dried within the first few hours has a reasonable chance of being saved. Hardwood flooring that sits wet for two days is typically lost.

This is not a sales argument — it is how water and materials interact. Fast response saves materials, reduces restoration costs, and shortens the overall project timeline. It also reduces the risk of secondary mold damage which adds significant cost and complexity to any water damage project.
